Anathea Powell, MD, FACS, is a colon and rectal surgeon with Dignity Health – Cancer Institute at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center.

Dr. Powell’s expertise includes all colon, rectal and anal conditions, including cancer and hepatobiliary cancers, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, and other anal problems. She is trained in endoscopy, laparoscopic, trans-anal and robotic surgery. She is board certified in General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Powell specializes in multidisciplinary re-operative surgery and welcomes patients traveling from a distance.

Dr. Powell received her medical degree from Boston University. She completed her General Surgery residency at New York University and her Colon and Rectal surgery fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School. She also completed a combined clinical and research fellowship in Surgical Oncology at the National Cancer Institute.

In her personal time, Dr. Powell is a longtime triathlete. When not operating, she can usually be found swimming, biking, running, or throwing tennis balls to her two Labrador retrievers.
